Costume designer Mirren Gordon-Crozier shares her experience working on “Where the Crawdads Sing.”
“The film was a labor of love. I became completely obsessed after reading the book and sought out the director Livi Newman. I sent her a letter and got my foot in the door. I spent endless hours researching images, textiles, trims, colors, silhouettes which were reminiscent of how I imagined Kya's to be. The movie starts in 1950 and essentially finishes in the 2000's, so there is a lot of character development with her as she grows from a young girl to a woman at the end of her life.
Since Kya is one with nature and doesn't care for fashion, we made sure she is always in sync with her surroundings and not influenced by the trends and fashions taking place in the town of Barkley Cove. Kya gets most of her hand-me-downs from Mabel and Jumpin's church and also whatever was left over from her mother, sisters and brothers. As a child, we see her being given a "fancy" peach dress and then later, as a teenager, she ends up wearing it on the beach while waiting for Tate to come home from college. It's her first opportunity to dress up. For every garment, we tried to have a backstory to make sure there was a reason Kya was wearing it.”
