Last year I traveled to Jharkhand in Eastern India with host Lexy Lebsack and producer Iris Xu to document allegations of child labor in the global supply chain of the cosmetics industry. I was shocked at what we witnessed there. In this impoverished region, children work in harrowing mines that are considered too narrow and dangerous for adult laborers to navigate. We were told many upsetting stories of injury and even death. The mica these children mine gets funneled into the global market where it is mixed into products to create the delicate “shimmer” you see in popular hair and skin products (as well as car paints and toothpastes). The video we made about it for Refinery29 was recently nominated for a Webby Award. It would mean a lot to me if you voted by clicking through the link in my bio. Today is the last day you can vote. Regardless of whether you vote or not, I hope these photos can serve as a simple reminder: be grateful for what you have and be mindful of where your purchases come from. Edit: we won. Thanks everyone!
