This past December, I went to Rock Island National Cemetery on the largest island on the Mississippi, to visit the grave of Robert Finney, my Great-Uncle-in-law (my wife's great uncle), an Iowan farm boy who joined the war effort at 17 and who died at Guadalcanal in fierce fighting in November 1942. The victory at Guadalcanal was a critical turning point in the Pacific Theater in World War II, putting Allied forces on the offensive. Uncle Bobby was from Waterloo Iowa, where the famous Sullivan Brothers, who all died in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, also hailed from. They came from the same town, crossed the globe halfway around the world to fight for freedom, only to make the ultimate sacrifice on the same day, November 13, 1942. Rest in peace. We remember you Bobby and all who have sacrificed for our freedoms today and every day.
