In advance of the infographics that undoubtedly will crop up in the next few weeks (and in light of the ones we’ve already seen floating around regarding the white supremacist insurgency in D.C.), it’s more important than ever that we remain vigilant in vetting the content that we consume and making sure that it aligns with the values and demands of our communities. It’s disturbing to see folks who were advocating for defunding and abolishing police now embracing carceral solutions to combatting white supremacist violence and the dismantling of white supremacist institutions. There’s ample evidence that the police have colluded with white supremacists, and ballooning their budgets any further is not going to solve the problem of white supremacist violence in the streets, in our communities, in our institutions, and in the highest seats of power in our government. This means rejecting any framing that relies on FBI data to make its point. It also means following the leadership of communities most impacted by discriminatory policing, white supremacist violence, the so-called war on drugs and terror, and other state-sponsored oppression.
