Dandruff Shampoo to Treat Acne? The answer is: only if you are treating “fungal acne”, which to be clear is not actually acne, but instead is folliculitis, or infection of the hair follicles. In “fungal acne”, the infection comes from a yeast called Malassezia, and the correct term is Pityrosporum folliculitis.
So the first part of treatment is making sure that you actually have “fungal acne” vs. regular acne, as treatments are different. Acne is caused by bacteria and is typically treated with antibacterial agents like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and retinoids.
“Fungal acne” can be treated by dandruff shampoos, because.. they have anti-fungals in them! These include: ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, and pyrithione zinc.
