Pouring from a pitcher into an open cup is a low-prep activity that helps your toddler build several skills:
✅ Fine motor control. Transferring dry materials or liquid calls for precision and hand-eye coordination. Refining this ability requires repetition. As you continue to offer this activity, you’ll see your child’s accuracy improve. It’s helpful to start with dry goods, as pouring water is more challenging.
✅ Sensory awareness. When pouring beans, rice, or dry pasta, your child can note the different ways the substances move and the various sounds they make. Try adding food coloring to rice to add visual appeal.
✅ Independence. As your little one’s pouring ability grows, they can retrieve their own drink of water.
✅ Oral motor strength. Drinking from an open cup strengthens muscles in the mouth that are used to form words.
Thank you @more_than_montessori for showing how The Grooved Pitcher and Glass from The Realist Play Kit support the progression from pouring dry goods to the more advanced pouring of liquids. 💞 Sized just right for toddlers’ hands, the set is recommended for children who are at least 19 months of age.
👉 Safety reminder: Please remember to supervise your child during pouring activities and put away all materials when playtime is over.
