Happy Third Year Anniversary to our Mayfair Store. It was an honor for us to work with Sir Norman Foster & Partners on this store. A Master of the highest order as well as a pioneer in Sustainable Architecture. The store is an example that beauty, design and inspiration don’t have to come to a cost to our Environment.
Our London store at 59 Brook Street across from the iconic @claridgeshotel was sustainably built using reclaimed wood and non-toxic vegetable dyed leather. The custom Benchmark furniture is made in Hungerford from a London plane tree that fell
in a storm in Lincoln and all the corners have been rounded because in nature there are no rectangular edges. The herringbone oak parquet floor is made from wood reclaimed from former officers' mess hall at the Copthorne Barracks in Shrewsbury, England, which was demolished in 2018. Each piece had to be painstakingly cleaned, painted and laid by hand. The lights are on automatic dimmers. The leather has been dyed using non-toxic vegetable dyes, and the curtains are linen rather than cotton.
The original architect of the store was Sir Robert William Edis.
Edis made the case for classic design over temporary
fashion. He sought authenticity in materials - objects
should celebrate their materials, not try to disguise
them. Craftsmanship was valued over ornamentation.
The interiors of 59 Brook Street were designed in a way that is faithful to Edis' original conception and echoes our design philosophy. The Dutch gables, red brick and chimney stacks of Edis' original building remain intact and are surviving proof of his belief in tradition and authenticity in materials.
