So brilliant to see the work of Jo Bruton (pics 1-6) alongside the work of Rosa Lee (pics 7-10) in the duo show ‘Haptic Vison’ @richardsaltoungallery . Jo was my tutor at art school and is a huge inspiration to me and i’m sure many others. I haven’t seen Jo’s work in the flesh for some years, and it seemed to resonate with me now more than ever. Her use of colour and surface texture - the bold theatricality, with the subtle attention detail. The disregard for traditional art historical hierarchies, and even her admiration for the American pattern and decoration movement. Feeling very grateful to her and looking forward to more shows by this brilliant artist please! “The exhibition puts into focus Bruton and Lee’s influence on abstract and feminist art in the UK in the 1980s and 1990s. Inspired by the American Pattern & Decoration movement, Bruton and Lee created a new type of abstraction that made use of traditionally feminine decorative elements – like patterning, beading and collage – to dismantle the hierarchy of fine art over craft. In doing so, they raised questions about the validity of modernist conventions and reclaimed the position of women within the history of painting.” Show continues until 1 October @bruton_jo #jobruton
