Through January 30th by appointment at [email protected] The show features works by Eliza, @itskimeze and @lydiablakeley [...] Eliza Hopewell, known widely for her paintings on ceramics and tiles or as murals, has focu- sed on smaller paintings on canvas, paper and board during this residency. Centred on wo- men reminiscent of renaissance-style medusa paintings, with long flowing hair and set back against a surrealist sky ¬– drenched in a tinge of pink synonymous with the colours of the palazzo – Hopewell’s paintings are an exciting departure from her ceramic and mural work. Her paintings are filmic – reminding me of Cindy Sherman’s photographs that capture the pinnacle moment in a dramatic scene, with something happening before and/or after – whilst also blending history and the contemporary. This is through them feeling as though they could at once reference Biblical or mythological scenes, whilst still being focussed on wo- men through a contemporary lens.
