FLASH FLOODING HITS MISSOURI & KENTUCKY, DESTROYING HOMES AND KILLING 29••Our hearts are with all of our family facing wild floods in Missouri & Kentucky right now. In St. Louis heavy rainfall last Wednesday led to flash flooding, leaving cars submerged, people stranded, houses damaged, and one person dead. In Kentucky, at least 28 people lost their lives in the floods that even swept some houses from their foundations.•“Natural” disasters like this remind us of how much we need to come together & unite as a people. Some already struggling are getting set back by this flood & don’t have robust networks to support them through it. Even if they have it among families & friends, it’s a lot of strain to put on those people. As Black people, we need to get back to being fully connected, all of us in it together, holding each other up.•It’s unrealistic to imagine that our enemy will prioritize helping us in a crisis that threatens them as well. They already don’t treat us fairly. When a crisis touches them too, they treat us like the Ukrainians treated Black people trying to flee, like the Chinese did Black people trying to just live during Covid, like this country did during Hurricane Katrina. That means we’ve got to build & get enough strength to hold things together for ourselves, even in the face of crises like these. Insurance companies, the government, emergency relief organizations... they all failed us before & will again.
