East Harlem. @veralistcenter #repost ---------------------------------------- In September, our Borderlands Fellow Carolina Caycedo (@lacaycedo) convened a ceremony and vigil around a communal altar of pagamentos (payments or offerings) @elmuseo as a public space for tribute and solidarity action to honor those who have been killed on the frontlines of environmental justice. “I hope this temporary space we're building together,” Caycedo said, “contributes to the construction of environmental memory. That is the first step towards the non-repetition of violence, and brings a little bit of healing, a little awakening, a little transformation within us." Following the event, the collective pagamentos were composted and used to nurture the soil the community garden at Union Settlement (@unionsettlement) in East Harlem, a site we return to this Saturday, May 7 for La Siembra, an action that convenes around Caycedo planting a memorial tree and sonic marker in the garden, and includes a roundtable discussion that centers on environmental justice, water protection, Indigenous protocols, and ecofeminist frameworks. Caycedo will be joined by Arizona water protectors Nellie Jo David and Amber Ortega, along with Tatiana Roa Avendaño, an environmentalist, educator, and researcher at CENSAT.
