6•9•22 As of last night, I have officially completed my swing bingo card and have now performed all 8 of the tracks I cover, in addition to a couple surprise female tracks (Oliver Keating, reporting for duty). It’s awful when someone tells you you can’t do something. It’s debilitating when that person is yourself. Since the moment I heard that I was cast as the ONLY male swing in @theprommusical , I felt every ounce of familiar self doubt and anxiety creep back in. And then I got to rehearsal and could feel the walls close in on me more and more as the days went by. I never thought I could do something like this, and yet here I am. Eight months later and I’ve finally conquered that thing that I never thought I would/could. Swinging has taught me so many things, but most of all, it’s taught me grace, forgiveness (towards myself and others), hard work, and, surprisingly enough, pride. I’m not always perfect when I swing on; I’m the first to admit that. But perfection is overrated and, today, I can officially say that I did the thing and I’m pretty proud of that.
