Artisans in Mexico by @samyoukilis for @voguemexico
Featuring feminist collective and textile workshop, Malacate Collective
Established fifteen years ago, Colectiva Malacate in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, aims to reactivate and showcase the designs and ancient, traditional techniques of the region. Across Mexico, feminist discourse has taken on a special urgency in recent years. The injustices that previous generations of women faced in silence are beginning to be loudly denounced; gender roles that were accepted in the past are now being questioned publicly. Together, the women of Malacate explore and celebrate the diversity of their stories, sharing their cultures and traditions with each other and with others who have taken an interest in their mission.
“In the future, I see the women at Malacate and I together, always together, making our dreams come true. I hope that any woman who comes across our story can see that anything she wishes is possible when she organizes with other women.”
