At the beginning of the year, we initiated a series of design investigations into the symbolic potential of charm bracelets. We invest in these self-initiated projects as an avenue for discovery, yet they constantly develop, challenge and inspire us to reach new heights within client projects. So whilst the project draws upon art direction, speculative design, jewellery design and identity design – we aren’t overly concerned with categorising it. The exchanges between these various disciplines are more compelling, and we maintain an inquisitive mindset. We thought about material and time, looking into ancient and weathered materials or futuristic and technical ones. The notion that charms from across time and space could assemble on a single bracelet appealed to us. This thinking informed the choices for this piece entitled 'Joy is Pure'—juxtaposing antique-looking porcelain for the charm against a material that could be carnelian, resin or coloured glass for its chain. We were also keen to bring a sense of relative scale and context—building design cues and functional details such as chain links, closures, hallmarks and etchings.
