At the launch of the 911 Speedster at the 1987 Frankfurt International Motor Show IAA, Porsche makes headlines with the Speedster Clubsport concept car. This spectacular exhibit is an open single-seater that upholds the philosophy of Porsche’s Speedster from the 1950s: No frills but geared towards pure driving experiences. Replacing the windscreen is just one small deflector in front of the driver who is protected by a roll bar. There are no side windows. The plastic covering for the cockpit is evocative of the racing Porsche 550 Spyder back in the fifties. The concept with the 911 Carrera body is the predecessor to a highly coveted, rare version of the Speedster: From the summer of 1988, only 171 units of the 911 Carrera Speedster are built for export.
