When you grow up as an immigrant, going back to visit your home country is one of those ‘if you know you know moments’⁣ 🇬🇷 🇺🇸 ⁣ After moving to the US at the age of 10 I had to wait about 10 years before being able to enter / leave my country legally again. ⁣ At that point, I was a broke college student living in NYC on my own. I was lucky if I could afford to travel home in the summers to see my mother & rest my heart. ⁣ Moving & living in the US paved such an illuminated path for me that I would never change a thing. ⁣ But DAMN do I feel like I live a double life when I do get to visit Greece now. ⁣ I can’t help but wonder what my life would have been like and who I would be as an adult if I grew up there. ⁣ Sometimes I see how people live & enjoy life that it’s hard to explain to people who grew up in the US. The friendships are different, people cut to the chase, they don’t small talk. They ask real, hard questions when they see you. I admire this rawness. ⁣ And I try to take it home with me every time. Along with the weight I always have to lose after eating spanakopita and my moms home-cooking 🤭 🌯⁣ Ready to do it all over again now.
