"I knew this video needed real grain and texture, like Tongo’s poems. I shot another short film with 500T and loved how it turned out, so I had a feeling it would work for this film as well. I really wanted the video to have a kind of humility- not flashy, smooth or fancy– to feel like it was grounded with grit. And 16mm 500T is the most direct way to accomplish that sort of image texture." -@naftalilives ⠀ "We knew we were going to have to work with stock that was expired (leftover from Naf’s previous short), so tests were a necessity. The Kodak Lab in Queens provided a clip test on several cans and gave us the densities of the cyan, magenta, and yellow layers so we had an idea of what we were dealing with. Based on our tests, we determined that overexposing 1 stop and pushing the developer +1 additional stop at the lab gave us the look we wanted. ⠀ We were an extremely light crew, and we were working with a limited supply of stock, so starting off each morning with three loaded and ready 400’ magazines was a big part of helping us make our days. I trusted the film to give us the tonality and range that would help our talented actors jump off the frame.
