#FBF to 1964, when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife, Coretta Scott King, are greeted by Ralph J. Bunche, UN head of Special Political Affairs, at #UnitedNations Headquarters in #NYC.⠀
⠀
Dr. and Mrs. King stopped in New York to visit the Bunche family on their way to Oslo, Norway, where Dr. King was to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1950, Mr. Bunche had himself become the first African American to become a Nobel laureate.⠀
⠀
Dr. King and Mr. Bunche struggled together for years for the ideals they shared. When Ralph Bunche learnt that Dr. King had been assassinated, he was devastated, saying: “The world has lost one of its most earnest, respected and commanding voices in the allied causes of peace, freedom and the dignity of man.”⠀
⠀
Racial discrimination is a human rights violation - and the promotion of human rights has been a guiding principle of the UN since its creation, and continues today.⠀
⠀
Every day, each and every one of us can #StandUp4HumanRights and help stop racial prejudice and intolerant attitudes.⠀
