6 years of @theunbreakableorg 🤍 I never thought I would become the founder of a nonprofit organization. But there I was, just six days after surviving one of the scariest days of my life, sitting in therapy and saying the word unbreakable for the first time. I had no idea how much that word would carry me, what it would teach me, or how it would shape the little idea that first came to life at my parents’ kitchen table. I was a first-generation college student. I had no funding, no access to large donors, and no idea how to start a nonprofit. But I did have an idea. And I knew it would work because connecting with others who truly understood what I was going through, and learning how to take control of my mental health, were the very things that helped me survive that incredibly dark time (along with cuddles from my dog, chocolate-covered pretzels, and lots of tears). Fast forward six years and here we are. We’ve worked with thousands of students across the United States, showing them that it’s possible to take control of their mental health. We’ve partnered with organizations I once only dreamed about like @ladygaga @momgerm incredible @btwfoundation, @mtv, @aerie, @cbstv, and more. I hugged @gabbygiffords of @giffords_org and shared our story with her, which was a dream within itself. We started a scholarship and mentorship program for students impacted by gun violence because no one deserves to walk through a tragedy alone. To date, we’ve awarded $43,000 in scholarships to 43 individuals, each with a powerful story to tell. We’re normalizing mental health in schools, in communities, and online, and we’re not stopping. To every young person empowered by our mission to take control of their mental health and life, and to every scholarship applicant brave enough to share their story, thank you. And to all the individuals and organizations who keep us going, I’m just so thankful. There are days when I feel the weight of it all, but I know what we’re doing matters. I often think about the girl who first wrote out this mission and I think she’d be really proud of where we are today. Happy 6 years @theunbreakableorg, you’re my safe space.
