"Empath follows Kate, a young woman who has been mysteriously afflicted by hyper-empathy syndrome; absorbing the emotions of those around her. It’s my love letter to Todd Haynes’s 1995 masterpiece, Safe. I believe in a similar fashion we were able to make a layered cautionary tale that prods at a lot of interesting questions and is open to multiple interpretations. I was particularly interested in exploring to what degree does our sense of community motivate, or even unconsciously dictate our emotional responses-- is empathy a tribal tool that functions to reinforce group cohesion?
