“It takes a Village”
This body of work is really important to me as it goes deeper than a mere jpeg. I was raised with the help of my community as an infant who suffered from severe respiratory distress and still get reminds me of how me being here today is by sheer luck and grace.
Today, i woke up at 4am with one of those respiratory difficulties, resulting in me taking ventolin (my go-to medicine whenever it gets like this). And the occurrence just reminded me of this collection. Art for me, is an avenue for me to address several issues concerning my life. Art as therapy like they say... when i made this work, a name would repeatedly come up in my mind “Mummy nurse”, the beautiful woman who lived 5 blocks away from mine at the time would give me a shot of “streptomycin” to ease my breathing. These days i settle for ventolin.
The hands in this photo is a representation of the people and collective efforts it took to raise me and as it’s well known, it really does take a village to raise a child anyway. Today i’m able to make art and introduce myself as an artist because of my one little but strong village of mine that stood by my mother’s side every step of the way, ensuring i lived to see today.
One of the reasons why i decided to share this is because i’ve come realize that i barely share the true inspirations behind my work and i’m trying to change now. ❤️
