Returning home from a quick little getaway to Chicago to see The Weekend! We decided to take the Amtrak for a few reasons: 1) none of us have taken trains in the US before 2) it’s a new adventure 3) it’s cheaper than flying or gas for driving. Well, I have to say our train experience TO chicago was absolutely horrendous. Not only did we arrive 8 hours behind schedule (arriving after midnight instead of 4pm) but the train’s toilets were clogged and overflowing (citing they didn’t have time to empty at the last stop), resulting in the nastiest of smells throughout the entire 8+ hour journey. The train was extremely run-down and filthy everywhere (not just dirty—we literally couldn’t see out the windows, they were so dirty), with seat backs ripped and recliners broken. The one saving grace was the lovely woman selling me wine in the cafe cart below!!) After losing our first day in Chicago we packed it in the next 1.5 days. Walk to Navy Pier, Architecture Boat Tour, followed by the Time Out market and ice cream in the North Loop, a nap, ramen dinner and then....THE WEEKEND concert at Soldier Field! So...that was pretty epic!! Today was a Gangsters and Ghosts tour and then back on the train to MSP. This time, the train left on time and so far, no nasty smells. My train tips if you choose to ride Amtrak: 1. Reserve your own space/room. They are much more expensive, but if you want the train experience in the US, this is the way to go for sure. You actually get served a meal and I believe your space is much better taken care of. You also have an area to stretch out. Although the coach seats are quite large and you have much more legroom than on a plane. Just hope for a well-cared for train car! 2. Bring sanitizer. Don’t need to explain that one. 3. Bring a blanket and inflatable pillow 4. Pack your own snacks and dinner if you are riding in coach!!!!! 5. Get a seat upstairs, the view is much better. 6. There’s no Wi-Fi and many spots of no cell service throughout the journey. Download stuff to watch before you board. Happy journeys! 🚊
