Today Yasmin Qureshi’s Private Members Bill on Flexible Working passed through the House of Commons. Is this a good thing? Well, yes and no. It’s good because MPs are starting to get the memo on flexible working - it’s good for everyone! But it’s not so good because this Bill just doesn’t go far enough. This Bill would mean you have a legal right to ask for flexible working from day 1, rather than after 6 months. But a right to request is still a right to decline. And there-in lies the problem because employers are still declining those requests, and employees are being shoved out of their jobs. But, it’s a step in the right direction, though I would call it a nudge in the right direction, rather than the giant leap we need. The Bill still has a few more hoops to jump through before it becomes law, and we will be working with Ministers to try and shape the Bill so it works for employees and employers. #flexibleworking
