It’s #WorldVeganDay today. I often get asked how I started my journey in conscious fashion & lifestyle and I’ve gotta say veganism was really the catalyst. I became vegan around 7 years ago as a personal stance against industrial farming as well as to better my health. I started delving deeper into conscious practices by educating myself which is how I came across the book To Die For by Lucy Siegle (@theseagull), an expose on the fashion industry written by the Observer's 'Ethical Living' columnist, examining the inhumane and environmentally devastating story behind the clothes we so casually buy and wear. It pretty much changed my life. I couldn’t stomach working in a part of the fashion industry that is destroying the planet and I began to feel a deep disconnect between my lifestyle and career. At the time I was working as a full-time stylist at a fast fashion brand, and it took a while but I finally decided to walk away from that job. I decided to pursue conscious fashion & lifestyle as well as my work with @theearthissue. It was the scariest thing I’ve ever done, but ultimately the best thing that has ever happened to me personally and professionaly. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t (and still isn’t) plain sailing. While I am not able to work with exclusively conscious brands, I’ve made my peace with that. I get to choose what jobs I work on and most of the time, they are truly rewarding projects working with amazing people. I am also able to life my life at a slower more mindful pace that is more in line with my values. This said, I recognise the privilege of being able to do what I do and for that I am always grateful. Here’s the new campaign for conscious fashion brand @megosa_label that I worked on, it’s projects like this that remind me what I took that leap of faith.
