We’re starting up the month with this gem from @jrbland who spoke at our Black Healing Remixed Conference. He calls on fellow Black men in the entertainment industry to prioritize their wellness and shift the culture to supporting Black women! CC: “So I guess when like Black men, when we’re not taking care of our mental health or practicing wellness or not showing up in our fullness or parenting our inner child or confronting our own toxic masculinity. We become another entity that black women have to protect themselves against. Or we become something that Black women- or trauma that they have to then heal from.
Which is really messed up and particularly in the entertainment industry because we as entertainers and artists, we have this unique opportunity to set and shift culture. Like we set trends and examples that the rest of the world follows. And so, it’s like okay this weekend I was listening to Kendrick Lamar‘s album, which I think is a great example of a black man really confronting his mental health, his daddy issues, his homophobia, his transphobia, and really coming to terms with what that means and how to heal from that but there is a particular song called, “We Cry Together.” Where Taylor Page says “You’re the reason we’re overlooked underpaid and under-booked. Like you.” And so if we really internalize that as Black men, like are we the reason that these Black women in entertainment are overlooked, underpaid and under-booked? And so we gotta do better. As a whole.”
