Well, this flashed up as a phone memory & warms my heart. Six years ago, the day we went to the gun dog breeder’s house to pick a puppy: we’d chosen the litter so carefully, & an ethical registered breeder. But I like to think Harry chose us. He was, of course, the one with the waggiest tail. (And the world’s most hopeless gun dog.) I love this photo - that first tentative stroke, the gentle wariness, the wonder.
