Looking at Yoshikazu Ebisu Hiruko Anthology #1, not sure the origins of this volume, almost feels like it could be a bootleg, info I found says it was limited to 500 copies, printed in 1999. The cover has a beautiful Pantone green, but some of the printing of the interiors seem amateur-ish. Makes me think it was possibly fan produced? This slim collection (104 pages) has a reprint of one of Ebisu’s very first manga, the original title piece for @breakdownpress ‘s collection The Pits of Hell (Teachers Damned to the Pits of Hell), the 1970s version. This original version (as @mangaberg notes) was printed in Ebisu’s self published anthology “Man” from 1970. The version in @breakdownpress ‘s book was redrawn in 1979 and published in 1980 in Garo. The original 1970s version clocks in at 35 pages, while the 1980s version was condensed to 15 (I assume for Garo’s purposes). Interesting to see Ebisu’s early style, almost feels like proto Mark Beyer. I made side by side comparisons for your viewing pleasure. There’s also an interview in Japanese at the end, if anyone wants to translate it I’ll send you pics! #yoshikazuebisu #ebisuyoshikazu
