““The Outrunners is more than a running club.”
This simple yet key message is delivered at every point of contact with this Hackney-based group, whose east London HQ is a modern-day arts salon, a paean to running, a centre of altruism and a celebration of youth, all rolled into one.
Another mantra is even more direct in helping to foster a vision of equality, to improve the lives of young people and to provide opportunity in the local area for the next generation of runners, creatives and business leaders to be discovered. Williams and The Outrunners are unafraid of tackling head-on issues such as community cohesion, inclusion and youth development.
Motivated to set up The Outrunners, Williams-Green was “conscious of young people not having access to certain things, or opportunities, and I wanted to provide a safe space to allow that to happen”. By creating a platform for those willing to volunteer their skills, utilise their networks and share their experience and time by getting involved with the club’s charity, The Outrunners are helping to strengthen existing communities by working within current frameworks, as well as building supportive new communities.
Outrunners Youth, the coaching side of the club, oversees groups that hold weekly runs and events in partnership with local youth clubs at multiple locations across Hackney. Regular volunteers attend sessions consistently, familiar faces allowing relationships to be formed and trust to be gained. By removing barriers and creating opportunity within fun, safe spaces, The Outrunners are enabling the power to dream and believe...”
