Reposted by @peterzachari And since Whitney was the musical guest, I thought, We should get her in the sketch too! But everyone said "Whitney's never gonna be in a sketch. She doesn't even show up. She's gonna be 12 hours late. Don't waste your time. She'll never do it." I said "Actually, I think she will." Then I thought If I were her, what would I want? If I wasn't in the mood to memorize all those lines or have extra work? And I realized I'll just make it super-fun for her. She's a singer. Don't give her pages of dialogue to bog her down. She's Whitney Houston. She's in New York City. She likes to party. I went up to her and said, "Okay, so this is what it's gonna be. You and I are gonna sing Little Drummer boy' and all I need for you to do is out-sing me. Do whatever you want. Say whatever you want. Push me out of the way. Stick your tongue out at me. You're the snotty school girl"--I could tell she liked that--"it will be easy." She was nodding enthusiastically. Then she clapped her hands and said "Yeah, yeah. Okay. I'll do it! Yeah!" But then---Yikes!--she had not shown up Saturday Night, and my sketch was at the top of the show. Ana Gasteyer had to get the Catholic uniform costume on just in case Whitney wasn't going to make it. (Of course Ana would have killed in the part, but it was a big deal to have gotten Whitney to agree to be in the sketch) I thought She's going to show up. I know she's going to show up. I made it so fun. She just going to turn up at the very last second. The rest of us were actually onstage seconds away from starting. But Whitney still hadn't shown. Then literally five seconds before Ana was about to go on, all dressed and ready to do Whitney's part, Whitney appeared like a vision. "Oh my God. Whitney's here. Swap them!" I thought "Yes!" And Whitney delivered. She was fantastic. After the show in the hallways, with fans surrounding her, Whitney spotted me and with the biggest smile on her face, said, "Girl--you are so crazy! That was so fun!" She was so happy and excited and sweet and I could tell she had a good silly sense of humor. Silly--I knew that. Legends @rosie Penny! Whitney!
