Repost from @wildtomorrowfund šŸ¦’šŸ’ššŸ’ŖšŸ» Did you hear the good news? Giraffe populations have increased across Africa - a dash of good news in the world of wildlife conservation šŸ¦’ According to a recent Africa-wide survey covering 21 countries, the total giraffe population overall has increased by 20% since 2015. This is due to a mix of renewed conservation focus and better census data. Today, the total wild giraffe population is estimated at 117,173 individuals. However, this is still a relatively small number considering there were a million giraffe in the 1700s, decreasing decade after decade, in what has been called 'the silent extinction'. The situation for giraffe differs across countries and regions. Some of the most endangered types of giraffe continue to decline, particularly where there is civil conflict and illegal hunting. Our giraffe at Ukuwela are the South African giraffe (G. g. giraffe) subspecies. There are now approximately 16,000 giraffe in South Africa, with the population trend increasing (including at our Reserve after our record 5 births in 2021). Yay for giraffe!
