The best skill beginner artists can learn early on is to keep your eyes UP! That’s where the information is, and that’s how you can trace what you see. (If you don’t know what I mean, check my last video for the pure contour drawing exercise.) All this said, it’s helpful to start with a roadmap. I recommend plotting out a few key points to start. (Pencil underlines tend to take away that nice organic line quality.) Over time, you’ll find a balance and rhythm between eye-tracing and checking relationships on your page.
