On September 15, we opened a solo exhibition of Shoko Nakazawa’s @shokonakazawa works. Nakazawa has quite a unique background. She has long been producing soft vinyl dolls, and it was a soft vinyl manufacturer named Mr. Okubo @instinctoy_hiroto_ohkubo who introduced me to the movement she has been a part of. He told me that around four years ago, there was a big craze in Asia for "sofubi art (soft vinyl art)" and its creators were making drawings and paintings as well, which were also selling ridiculously well. At the center of this trend were someone called Kenny @kennyswork2006 in China and Kasing Lung @kasinglung , a person of Chinese descent who lived in Belgium. They were followed by Okubo, Nakazawa, T9G @xt9gx , and others, and behind them there was a tremendous line of young artists of the genre following suit. And so I approached Kasing Lung, Shoko Nakazawa, T9G, and others about whom Okubo had told me and proposed that they each do a show with us. But our plans got all tangled due to the pandemic, and Kasing finally had his solo exhibition at Kaikai Kiki Gallery @kaikaikikigallery this year, and Nakazawa's solo show at Hidari Zingaro @hidarizingaro in Nakano Broadway is opening September 15. Her artistic style manifests in oil paintings based on stories from retro picture books, and she has an enthusiastic group of female fans. She is also participating in Roppongi Art Night @roppongi_art_night_official , so please come and see her works in person. Her work is also part of the Doraemon tribute exhibition at Kaikai Kiki Gallery. I hope you’ll enjoy them!
