Fifty years ago today, on September 5, 1972 – during the Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany – eight terrorists from the Palestinian militant group Black September infiltrated the apartments of Israeli athletes in the Olympic village. They killed two Israeli athletes and took nine others hostage. Subsequently, in return for the release of the hostages, the group demanded the release of 234 Palestinian prisoners and two West German founders of the Red Army Faction. After negotiations with the group broke down, a shootout at an airport near Munich transpired, resulting in the death of the nine hostages, five terrorists, and one West German policeman.
