For the exhibition “Evidence” at the Centre Pompidou @centrepompidou, Soundwalk Collective @soundwalkcollective and Patti Smith @thisispattismith invited me to create an installation that represents the passage of Antonin Artaud through the land of the Raramurí in the Sierra Tarahumara, Mexico. To pay homage to this mystical landscape, I designed a circular garden with native peyote species (Williamsi lophophora), rocks brought from the desert in the North of Mexico, and the red earth that Artaud had walked on.
This circular garden is a microcosm of the land, a sacred site that is threatened today by mining and agricultural interests. The threat is amplified by a new wave of interest in psychedelics and the recreational use of sacred plants, divorced from the rituals of the land and its keepers. It also represents the metaphysical journey that Artaud took to eviscerate himself from European ideology, from its rigidity of thought and spirit. It was the last moment of joy he remembered before dying in a psychiatric institution.
Paired with the sounds created by Stephan Crasneanscki @soundwalkcollective and Leo Heiblum @leoheiblum, as well as the piercing readings of Patti Smith, the garden becomes an altar and a place for contemplation, a portal that transports the visitor to time immemorial.
