In the 19th century, when Portofino was becoming popular with English and German aristocrats, Baron Baratta saw the potential in the monastic ruins and transformed them into a summer villa. In the late 1800s, a road constructed between Portofino and Santa Margherita Ligure opened the village up further and, in 1901, tourism pioneer Ruggero Valentini turned the villa into the Grand Hotel Splendid. Before long it was welcoming celebrities and nobility through its doors—the Duke of Windsor was the first to sign the Golden Book.
