Disco fever is back (did it ever leave?!) For my May Object Lesson I investigated the dazzling history of the mirror ball which has recently been showing up in some unlikely places—kitchens! countertops! underground pools! Patented in 1916 the so-called myriad reflector appeared in ballrooms, nightclubs, dance pavilions, and skating rinks before becoming the poster child of its namesake '70s dance movement. Swipe to see some super chic contemporary twists in the homes of @brookemetcalfe99, Maryam Madhavi, @seanrad (c/o @hallworthandheathens), and a London home by @pvmlondon. The last, circa 1912, image (thanks @jochen_eisenbrand) didn’t make it into the article but shows what appears to be an early mirror ball hung in the sun parlor of a Milwaukee tuberculosis sanatorium, likely used for its reflective qualities. 👀 Feels timely. Read more (and learn the preferred disco ball dealer of Beyoncé) at the link in bio.
