The U.S. Food and Drug Administration added sesame to its list of major allergens, which currently includes milk, tree nuts, peanuts, soy and several other items.
The move comes after a great deal of research and debate. One 2019 study found that roughly one in 200 people reported having a sesame allergy, and among folks who said they experienced allergy symptoms, one in four categorized their reactions as “severe.”
