Disheartened by the passing of Augustin Hernandez, an icon of Mexican architecture whose lifelong body of work blended Mexico’s prehispanic past with a bold and visionary futurity. His unique designs, like Praxis in Mexico City, were inspired by the fluid forms found in nature, forms which he transformed into his singular style of organic brutalism.
Last year I had the incredible opportunity of interviewing Agustín for the Mexico Issue of @purplefashionmagazine. Fueled by a relentless creativity, he kept working until shortly before his death at the age of 98. In this post are some of the original images and sketches that I photographed at Praxis, which was also his studio.
“I always look for unity and plasticity. There is an inherent difficulty in creating a structure that appears light but is held together through tension.” Agustín Hernández
