Today I commence my online summer bookclub reading Klara and the Sun by Kasuo Ishiguro. The book is narrated from the perspective of a robot created to care for children. It is about the effect of technology on society and the possibility of transhumanism, but most of all it about what it is to be human.
Who has read this book? Who wants to?
Here’s how the book club works: every other week for the next ten weeks I will post a podcast episode discussing each (of the five) sections of Klara and the Sun. On each episode, I’ll be joined by friends and fascinating people to discuss each section of the book—I encourage you to start your own in person book club! Then, I’ll post discussion questions here, where you can join in the discussion with other readers online or in person!
It sounds simple, but it’s worked for the past four summers. Episode one for Part One is up! Listen at the link in my bio, read part one of Klara and the Sun, and then tell me:
Why do you think the Mother allowed Josie to choose Klara?
I look forward to reading with you all!
