“The Hills” cover - by @theweeknd I’m preparing for my upcoming EU/UK tour and wondering how to become this feral and graceful again. Strange to see a past self, one you can almost touch but, like in a dream, the fingertips don’t quite meet. What meets instead is a disorientation around the figure. “That is me. That is her.” The two begin to blend. I’ve only previously experienced this dysmorphia when seeing videos of myself as a kid and feeling both fond and separate from her. I remember hearing the original of this song while visiting my brother and thinking it was heartbreaking and striking, so honest... We listened to it over and over on that trip and I was bent on knowing what it would feel like to sing that melody, those words. That’s usually how most covers begin for me. I just want to feel the words and melody in my mouth for at least an evening in my studio. Sometimes it ends there, other times, like with “The Hills” I want to repeat the experience again and again.
