In October 2010, several short weeks after leaving home and moving to NY, I took my first trip into Brooklyn to go to BAM Harvey Theater and see Ralph Lemon’s show, ‘How Can You Stay In The House All Day And Not Go Anywhere?’. I sat up in the obstructed-view nose bleed seats that being a freshman at NYU granted, and dreamt a very clear dream of ending up on that stage one day. As a day one realist (bordering on pessimist) I attribute my ability to dream that big to the fact that this very first introduction to dance in New York was represented by artists who looked like me. I saw an intense commitment to artistry from Gesel Mason (@geselm) and Okwui Okpokwasili (@bornokwui). I saw artists who researched, thoughtfully performed and shared a humanity, culture and story that I could relate to, that I could question, and that I saw myself in. I was deeply enthralled for reasons I didn’t have the words for at the time. 11+ years later, I’ll find myself on that very stage tonight. Hoping I can be a seed for another 18 year old’s big dream.
