60 Seconds on Eczema The red, inflamed, itchy skin you see as a result of eczema is caused by a dual combination of the skin barrier becoming impaired, which lets moisture immediately escape the skin, and the immune system over-reacting to external elements. @irondoctorhaz shares his tips on how you can help reduce eczema flare-ups by helping your skin retain moisture and reducing irritation: IDENTIFY YOUR TRIGGERS. Check the times/ occasions when you experience flare-ups, to identify what your skin is reacting to so you can find ways to avoid it. PROTECT YOUR OILS. Lots of these oils can be lost when we wash ourselves. So, make some changes to your daily routine. For example, shower using lukewarm/ cool water, dry yourself very gently, and try and use emollients as soap replacements. Washing with a moisturiser might feel odd at first, but washing with your normal emollient cream will avoid stripping your skin of much-needed moisture! REDUCE STRESS. Easier said than done, but stress is often a big trigger for eczema. If you can, look after your mental health by eating plenty of fresh fruit and veg, and taking exercise whenever you can. Eating dark chocolate, walnuts and pistachios is also proven to reduce stress! REDUCE ITCHING. Leave emollient creams in the fridge so that they give you a soothing and cooling effect, or pop an anti-histamine. And if it’s a child who’s scratching, keep their nails cut short and give them mittens to wear at night, to prevent them causing further irritation. We’re trialling ways to share more of our information with you, so do like or comment on this post if you’ve found it useful! #stephspackedlunch
