We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Maestro Larry Rachleff, who helped to shape Chicago Philharmonic for over two decades. Founding Chicago Philharmonic musician Jim Berkenstock shares his reflections: "The music world has lost an incredible talent, and I have lost a wonderful friend and colleague. I first met Larry when he conducted the Wind Ensemble at Northern Illinois University as a guest conductor. I was mesmerized by the innate musicianship and complete control that he displayed. What was to become the Chicago Philharmonic was just a concept, but we were looking for conductors for our first season. As it turned out, Larry was in the process of transitioning from a wind ensemble conductor to increased time leading orchestras. He was also taking on more work with the orchestra at Oberlin prior to his move to the Sheppard School of Music at Rice University in 1991. After further discussion, he agreed to conduct our Chicago Philharmonic (then Symphony II) in its first concert, which started a relationship that last over 20 years. He soon became our Principal Conductor and eventually, our Music Director. During that time, Larry and I became close friends and spent many wonderful times together. I count this relationship as a very important gift in my life. Although I mourn his loss, I am grateful for what he gave me, our orchestra, and our audiences. He got to know every musician personally. He remembered specific things about each of us. He brought out the best in everyone to a degree that even they didn’t think possible. He was a great leader, incredibly thoughtful and sympathetic musician, but most of all, a real Mensch. Chicago Philharmonic would not be what it is today without the caring hand that Larry waved over, and the spirit that he threaded amongst us." We welcome any shared memories of Maestro Rachleff from musicians and concert-goers.
