“What should I eat before I ride?”👉🏼This is one of the top questions I get from clients. This is where ergogenic aids come in. An ergogenic aid is any nutritional/pharmacological substance, device, or technique that can improve strength and enhance athletic performance 🏇🏻 While my answer is different for everyone based on individual needs, goals, and preferences, research and experience strongly supports the fact that eating carbohydrates before rides or any physical activity is one of the most effective ways to provide energy and enhance performance. The timing and type of carb matters. So here are my top recommendations for what look for in a pre-ride snack: 🍌30-60 minutes before a ride: an easily digested (simple) carb. They’re easily broken down and quickly converted into energy your body and muscles can use. This can help prevent GI upset/cramping that might occur from eating complex carbs too close to a ride. 🧇🥚1-2 hours before a ride: carbs + protein. The protein will allow for a sustained energy release during your ride. 🥪🥙3-4 hours before: a full meal complete with carbs, protein, and color (fruit/veggies).
