Story time: I recently had an electrician come over to do some minor upgrades to the house which involved rewiring and running additional cables. I always check their work out of curiosity and noticed several exposed wires and damaged connectors. I started asking questions and the electrician asked to speak to the “man of the house”. I gave him a pleasant smile and replied “he’s in the other room but I AM the woman of the house, now back to my questions.” After a few words back and forth he realized that I was the person who would need to be satisfied before he gets his pay. At this point in my life, I’ve literally lost track of how many times I’ve experienced stigmas and sexism when it comes to anything involving engineering or technical topics. I know I don’t look like the typical “engineer” but better believe I worked hard to create the life I have for myself and my family and gained a lot a great deal of knowledge along the way.⁣ ⁣ Moral of the story: Don’t judge a book by its cover. Yes this WOMAN has an Electrical Engineering degree and practiced in the field for 10 years. Yes this WOMAN loves fashion and makeup but also has the brains and intelligence to be acknowledged in field dominated by men. Yes this WOMAN is a content creator but is still actively working in the Oil & Gas Industry working 9 to 5 Monday through Friday while being a wife, and taking care of all my children. I saw all that to say, don’t allow the opinions of others or the way you “look” to dictate what you can accomplish. Your journey is limitless. Knowledge is literally power and no individual can strip that away from you. As a woman in a male dominated field (oh and a black woman at that), we have to work extra hard just to be seen and demand the respect that we deserve. It’s not always easy but the reward of knowing our power in it all is pricesless.
