There are various ways to layer retinoids with a moisturizer. The truth is, there are no scientific studies examining the absorption or irritation potential of retinoids depending on how it is layered with a moisturizer. However, from experience and common sense, these 3 are the general recommendations:
1. The most effective way to deliver a retinoid is to apply it directly to the skin without a barrier- RETINOID FIRST, then follow with a MOISTURIZER (if you feel that you need it at all). If your retinoid is formulated with hyaluronic acid and in a nice emollient base (like for example @skinmedicinals ), there is not need for the moisturizer at all.
2. For beginners or those of you with dry or more sensitive skin, I suggest applying a MOISTURIZER FIRST, the the usual pea-sized amount of a retinoid.
3. For those of you with super sensitive skin, I suggest the SANDWICH technique as shown in the video.
Products used in the video are:
🧴Arazlo (tazarotene lotion, strongest form prescription retinoid)
🧴 @rhode Barrier Restore Cream, a gentle fragrance-free moisturizer (with hydrating shea butter and soothing niacinamide).
🧴 @larocheposayusa SPF 70
If you are not sure which option to use, always safest to start with the sandwich technique and work your way up gradually to option #1.
