Growing up between Los Angeles and Seoul, South Korea, Justin Yoon has been heavily influenced by his diasporic upbringing, sexuality, and fascination with idolatry. A suburban fantasy world featuring Asian and queer characters is the centerfold of Nightfall Viewing. Alluding to the culture of celebrity obsession, the characters—Blue Dream, Marge, and Five Poundz (the dog)— are ordinary people, yet glamorously beyond reach. By playfully portraying the characters’ platonic intimacy, queer friendship and self love, Yoon conveys, “queer representation in a non-sexual way but using sensual imagery.” Nightfall Viewing is now on view at F*CK ART 2022: The Body and its Absence at the Museum of Sex, curated by Eve Arballo and Emily Shoyer.
