Pacifico Silano uses collage and photography to investigate the aftermath of the AIDS epidemic on queer communities. After working at his parent’s sex shop, “Undercover Pleasure”, in his teens, Silano sought to find meaning in erotica beyond pornographic content. Silano uses images from his personal archive of over 300 porn magazines to create large-scale tableaus, often increasing the scale of the original images to make them larger than life. By never showing the entirety of an image, Silano creates work that is obliquely erotic, always suggesting pornographic action. This piece, Easy Rider, made specifically for F*CK ART, advances Silano’s idiom of honing in on details from vintage gay erotica to create new narratives of American masculinity that have been appropriated and fetishized by gay men. Here, the images explore the tension between violence and pleasure. Easy Rider is now on view at F*CK ART 2022: The Body and its Absence at the Museum of Sex, curated by Eve Arballo and Emily Shoyer.
