Eleven years ago today, we rescued Orlando and Milbank from a damp and smelly barn. They were underweight, dehydrated, and sick. The boys had been purchased at auction, along with nine other calves, by a man looking to raise them for cheap beef production. When the group became ill and contracted pneumonia, their owner denied them care (which cost approximately $20 for all 11) — instead opting to shoot the young calves one by one. By the time authorities intervened, only five (including Orlando and Milbank) of the original 11 remained. We got them the lifesaving care they needed and brought the youngsters home to Farm Sanctuary, where they escaped the brutal fate the others had faced. Today, Orlando is the definition of a gentle giant. Very popular with guests and staff alike due to his sweet nature, he is the stoic leader of his herd. Milbank is a cow’s cow — he doesn’t have much interest In people, but he loves his farm animal friends!
