Another day, another George Santos scandal. The first-term rep from New York is now facing allegations that he stole $3,000 from a 2016 GoFundMe campaign intended to help a disabled veteran and his ailing service dog.
In an interview with local media org Patch, Richard Osthoff, a Navy veteran who lives with PTSD, says his service dog Sapphire was suffering from a life-threatening tumor when a veterinary technician connected him with a man named Anthony Devolder, who supposedly ran a charity called Friends of Pets United. Anthony Devolder is a name George Santos has been known to use previously on other occasions.
Osthoff claims Devolder helped set up a GoFundMe drive for Sapphire but refused to hand over the $3,000 that was successfully raised. Instead, Devolder said that the money would be used to help other animals, according to Osthoff.
‘To everyone who helped me and Sapphire raise the money for her surgery, I’m sorry to say that we were scammed by Anthony Devolder ... and Friends of Pets United,’ Osthoff wrote in a Facebook post dated November 13, 2016.
According to a December 2022 report by the NY Times, there is no record of a registered charity under the name Friends of Pets United on either the federal or state level.
Santos denied the accusations to Semafor via text, saying, ‘Fake. No clue who this is.’
On Tuesday night, Semafor’s Washington bureau chief, Benjy Sarlin, pointed out that an April 2016 tweet from an account called @Bellemoi156 is still up on the platform. The tweet reads, ‘Click here to support sapphire The Veteran rescue! by Anthony Devolder.’
